Overall, I’m digging the vibe of this trailer. It makes the film look and feel like a more light-hearted yet still authentic comedy-of-age teen girl story in a vein similar to director Kelly Fremon Craig’s exemplary work on this year’s Judy Blume adaptation, “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” and (arguably even more so with regard to subject matter) her superb high school dramedy “The Edge of Seventeen.” Produced by Happy Madison and Alloy Entertainment, Netflix describes “You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah” as being about “the high comedy and modern teen angst that comes with family, friendship, and first crushes,” which certainly aligns with my early impressions.
“You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah” was written for the screen by Alison Peck (“UglyDolls”) and directed by Sammi Cohen, who previously helmed Hulu’s winsome sapphic teen rom-com “Crush” in yet another bit of encouraging information. You can stream the film on Netflix starting August 25, 2023.
